How to stay on the board and control the speed after successful water start? Learn what is wind window. And how to keep the balance, get the right amount of pull from your kite to stay on the board.
Water sports have a lot of similarities, but they are very different from each other. Kitesurfing (kiteboarding), windsurfing and wakeboarding require approximately the same physical training, but, nevertheless, in theory and in practice they require a number of quite different skills and abilities. One of the cardinal differences in these sports is the technique of slowing down. To do this, you should first listen carefully to the instructor and visit a proper sports school. You need to learn of how everything is arranged in this sport and what laws of physics will play a significant role for you while riding and surfing.
Kitesurfing, wakeboarding, surfing and other types of popular water sports require knowledge of the theory. And, of course, practice with an experienced instructor. These sports are considered extreme. Which means that the risk of injury is several times higher than in other sports. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting into a difficult situation, or even getting injured. One introductory lesson for a total beginner in kitesurfing will not be enough. You should understand that this is a prestigious and beautiful sport. Only after careful preparation, it will give you moments of happiness and freedom on the water. It will enrich your life and give it acuteness. But don’t rush into action – theory first. The desire to show off is the most common cause of water accidents.
As for the ability to stop and slow down, things are easier with windsurfing. All that is required is to drop the sail, although, it has its own subtleties. In kitesurfing you can literally be pulled forward holding the kite. In order to stop or slow down, you need to know at least the basics of the wind window theory. Studying the theory of flying the kite is very important. Wind window is the first and most important knowledge that you must learn and know how to apply in practice.
Many beginners mistakenly believe that in order to stop, you need to move the kite down. When kite is in the power zone there is the strongest pull in the wind window. In fact, it’s the most comfortable position for a beginner when the kite is at 12 o’clock. It does not pull you anywhere and makes your weight lighter.
This is exactly what happens in the first stages of training, and this is typical for beginner kitesurfers. When the kite is placed to the side from you it starts to pull aside stronger. In order for it to stop pulling, it’s enough to transfer it upwards, at 12 o’clock. However, the danger lies in the fact how you do it. When you gain speed, and then, in order to stop, you want gently move the kite up to the initial position. If you do very aggressive – then you are guaranteed to jump with a kite flip. And this is a trick for professionals and definitely an extremely dangerous experiment for beginners.
So, you want to start learning the basics of kitesurfing. To begin with it is necessary to understand, how the board is arranged. Also learning the theory of the wind window will help. The nose of the board will turn to the wind if you bend the back foot and transfer the weight of the body to the stern. Then, the board will standcross your course. To avoid this, you need to straighten the front leg, thereby directing the board a little lower in the wind. There will be the following – the board will try to slip out from under you. But this will not happen, because you will hold it with your front leg.
Imagine that you are on the water, beneath you there is a board and you are holding the kite. In order to deploy the board to the right, many beginners automatically try to straighten the left knee. Thereby intending to push the board to the right. And although the board really starts to move in the right direction, but at the same time you turn your back on the kite. Remember that the board should always go one side forward (one foot forward). Bend your back knee. That way you will control the board much easier.
The board and kite – are your only support on the water. So, if you want to turn the board to the right, then slowly move the kite itself to the right too. Slowly turning the shoulders and chest after it. Do this always necessary in the direction of the kite. In this case, the weight of your body must go to the back foot, which you have to bend and steer with your front foot. Then the kite will literally press you down to the board. You will feel the support under your feet. As more speed you take as easier it will become to keep the balance on the board.
Let’s move on to the main thing – how to stop? Remember that when you gain speed just falling into the water, will cause you a small crush. It this case you will lose control of the board. What you need to do is to move the kite up and than fall into the water. Do not keep the kite in the power zone. Otherwise it will be much more difficult for you to control the board when staring over with water starts. Remember the following rule – the stronger the wind, the closer you must keep the kite to 12 o’clock. Then you will be more stable to stand on the board.
A novice kitesurfer should know that the kite itself is a lazy thing and comes to life only in the hands of a rider. Kite usually flies towards the edge of the wind window where its thrust is minimal. Holding the bar with your both hands, you must aggressively direct the kite to the center of the wind window. Then the thrust increases and you begin to move.
In case you are lucky and an excellent wind, then all you need is to put the kite in a correct position. The kite position is always varies according to the wind strength. If the wind is strong keep your kite a little higher. And if the wind is light keep your kite lower – closer to the water. Then you can ride for fun. Generate enough thrust of the kite when doing water starts to go on the board and not to sink.
Although you just hold onto the kite without controlling it, you use the headwind that appears when you start moving. But here it is important not to forget about one vital nuance – the more speed you develop, the more you begin to be pulled. When you have developed the speed, the kite begins to aspire to the edge of the wind window. Which means that you risk turning over and in order to stop or slow down also apart of wind window theory you need to know the board control theory.
A bit of a theory: body position and board control
Once you are on the water and developed speed you can adjust the tempo and thrust also with the help of the board. You will need to put a board across your course. Next, there are two ways of doing this. First, and it’s wrong, straighten your back leg, which means your body position doesn’t generate the right gravity. And this means that even if you put the board across, the kite will still pull you hard and throw you over your board.
The second way is to bend the knee of the hind leg even more. Thereby even more loading the stern of the board, which will send it even more to the wind. At the same time, it is necessary to bend the front leg. Bend your knees and sit down as low as possible to the water. Pull your hips forward, and lean yourself back. Thereby you put the board into a slide, or a side skid. These actions will allow you to take the kite to the edge of the wind window and stop the board.
A wind window is something every beginner kitesurfer should know about. Ignorance of the theory can be an expensive experience, and fraught with injury and other troubles. There are times when someone decides to learn how to ride a kite on their own, without an experienced instructor and visiting a kite school. Usually this results in the fact that the new kitesurfer will use as a break his own bottom. In the majority of cases the kite will either fly up, or fall down. The kite always flies lower in the wind than the one who controls it. The kite naturally is trying to avoid the power zone if left uncontrolled for few seconds.
How does the kite flies inside the wind window
Wind window is where and only the kite is flying. Instructors describe wind window an imaginary surface with a quarter of a sphere. Many mistakenly believe that the edge of the wind window is 90 degrees to the direction of the wind.
Kite always flies not sideways and not above you, but downwind relative to the rider. In order for the traction to appear, you need to direct the kite to the center of the wind window, although it always aspires to the edge. The closer to the center you manage to direct the kite, the greater speed you will develop. The wind window has an edge and its radius is equal to the length of the slings. At each of the points of this “arc” the thrust will be minimal. Again, if you want safely launch the kite and switch to a low speed, you must position it in the edge part of the wind window.
It is necessary to know at least the most important rules. It will help you avoid unpleasant and dangerous situation on the water. Think about attending a good kite surfing school. Experienced instructor will be able to tell in detail about the theory. First thing instructors teach you about wind window, wind directions. Next part is how to setup the kite. One of the important part of the course is self-rescue techniques. Of course there will be a lot to cover and a lot information to remember. Probably next day you will go into the water and will cover board skills (water starts, riding left, right) If you were focus on the wind window theory you will understand quick how to stop and slow down when practicing in the water.
